Oh Adam....

I've said my peace about suicide and Frankie and what it did to me when my best friend killed himslef almost 20 years ago, and I never thought in a million years that this stupid little podcast would have to mourn the death of another friend, but here we go.

Im old. To the Spector 45 guys, at 37, Im old. But I'm also a parent of two of the coolest, craziest, so NOT alike two little boys you will ever meet. They're awesome; the only thing I live for these days, and I could not imagine what Frank Sr. and Adam's parents are going through. My boys are my soul. My everything, my "Little Sirs". They are absolute and pure and oblivious to anything but mom and dad. I wish it would stay this way forever.

But it wont. They'll grow up into two absolutely completely different people. They'll unfortunately be twenty-something-year-old boys one day, and I think they're going to become two of the coolest young men you'll ever meet. As Adam was. As Frankie was.

And if anything as surreal as this happens to my boys I honestly have no idea what in the hell I would do.

After a very melancholy and sad weekend with my wonderful staff, I FINALLY made it home, sat outside, and listened to music. Really listened to it. Carter's posthumous album, Camille Cortinas' new record, old Spector 45, Record Hop, Killing Joke, The The, the new Decemberists, High Tension Wires, Tom Waits, and all my favorite bands since I was 20ish, music I hate, music I love. Cried. Skipped the crappy songs. Laughed. It was fantastic.

Then I went inside, checked on my two little sirs, squeezed the crap out of them, cried more, and wished that they never had to grow up and that I didn't have to come here and write this.

This must end. And I'm so sad, but so lucky.

Adam, you will be missed. By more than you know.

I've been where these guys were. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE call a friend, call your mom, call me! 214-354-5323 come to my bar for a drink, or call 1-800-273-TALK. I called that number when I was 27. It worked. The little sirs and my bald head will vouch for that.

In Memoriam: Frank Campagna, Jr.

I was 19 when my best friend killed himself. He was 20 years old. I'm 36 now. It literally changed the course of my life. I dropped out of college, mourned, got pissed, picked myself back up and started bar backing at a bar in Austin. I met my wife there, worked my ass off, moved to Dallas, met some of the coolest people I've ever known, and together we opened The Meridian Room 7 years later.

I met Frankie there when he was 17.

He was a regular, albeit an illegal one, but he was Frankie: the son of Frank, the guy who did the Tea Room murals and raised his kids in Deep Ellum before living there was trendy or dangerous. Frankie and his wonderful sister Amber seemed to thrive on the fuel of the area, good or bad, and they never have let it go.

Exposition Park was the first part of town my wife took me to when we moved here. Bar of Soap was in it's heyday, and I saw a million bands there, Orbit Room, Spider Babies, Galaxy Club, the list goes on. We were lamenting the fact that we saw Spector 45 in some incarnation when Frankie was probably 16 or 17, and what an amazing, blow-your-face-off guitarist he was. It is absolutely part of the reason we opened a bar on the outer fringe of Deep Ellum. It felt right.

Over the years, Frankie has played in my bar(s) a few times, most recently December 20th, when he played solo at The Libertine for our annual Christmas toy drive. We had a brief conversation before he played, and he was talking about how nervous he was, and how bad it was going to suck. 20 minutes later, he was on top of the bar, playing his acoustic as loud and as fast as he could with a giant smile.

After he finished, and he was done loading out and the next band was about to start, we had another conversation about charity and what it has meant to us individually. I was thanking him profusely for donating his time, and what it meant for the kids at the shelter we were working for. He said that his father had always made himself and his sister do charity work since he was about 8 years old, and it was only recently that he appreciated all the 'crazy' things his dad had made him do. He is a humble man. And a boy. And a bona-fide rock star.

But it didn't take just my friends death make me who I am today. The ultimate act never goes away. You never forget it. It is there every day, and it sucks. Forvever. It's been almost 20 years, and the anger, hurt, absurdity and sublime are there always. It is the saddest thing I will ever experience, because I have all the knowledge of what came after. It hurts daily.

But us humans are wonderful, advanced beings, and we keep on keepin'-on, (for some reason), just for the simple fact (I think), because we HAVE to. However many of us are left at the end, we have to let our kids know and their kids know about the greatness of life, and how it grows and changes and morphs into all sorts of wonderful and horrible and great and awful things. I wish Frankie knew that it will/would/might-be/maybe/maybe not be better one day. It's life, and he left it too soon.

I want to send all of our thoughts and prayers to the Campagna family, and thank Frankie for the musical and personal gifts he's given us over the years. And the laughs, and absurd hilarity. Frankie, you were a true crazy man/sweetheart/rock star/softie/hardass/complicated genius. All of the attributes of a great friend. We love and miss you.

HomeGrown Fest (Give it a listen!)

“Homegrown Music and Arts Festival” is an annual event that highlights some of the best of North Texas Music and Arts community.

This celebration will take place on Saturday, May 22nd in a new Downtown Dallas park called, “Main Street Garden”. Much of the proceeds will go to Benefit “Way Into Music”, a charity that supports Elementary and Middle School Children’s after school music education.

The Homegrown Fest will feature 14 Bands on two stages and 20 Booths for local Artists and Businesses.
